thank you very much susan, it is very much appreciated. :-)

  3. Laura says:

Ok, I’m thick I guess since I’m about to say I don’t get it to a cartoon where the caption is “DOH” but….I don’t get it. (blushing)

Is the global issue they are supposed to be addressing that there’s somehow huge footprints in the sky??

    ‘splain please.

  4. marcus says:

The huge footprints are representative of the carbon footprint left by the airplanes that emit Co2 – perhaps the term carbon footprint hasn’t made it global yet.

  5. Laura says:

Oooooh I get it now. Thanks Marcus!

    DOH! ;-)

  6. Well pictured.

Although I did fly to Australia this year… :(

    It’s also expensive…to do all these long-haul transatlantic flights…

  7. jonbirch says:

i’m not anti flying really… it’s just we should be careful and try to be good stewards. there are those, even in our faith, who lack respect for the creation. the irony of their behaviour is lost on them.
your right brunettekoala, long haul is expensive, but it is still subsidised by government… that can’t be a good thing, surely?

  8. I’m not anti-flying either, but it does get a point where people fly when it’s perhaps not entirely necessary.

It’s not good for your bank balance, it’s not good for your health, it’s not good for the environment to be doing it loads…

What part of it is subsidised?

  9. jonbirch says:

the fuel. which is why aeroplanes still fly when they’re half empty, because they can afford to.
    shocking really.

  10. Laura says:

I’m curious about what you’d propose they do? Make everyone that has a confirmed seat wait until enough people arrive to fill up the empty seats? I’m one of millions of people who fly very frequently (like twice a week, every week) for work. In order to get to client sites in the US we have to fly from one end of the country to the other, it’s not an option to choose where our clients are, and we sure as heck can’t drive that far. So, I guess one of those big giant footprints in the sky is mine huh?
I’m interested to hear what you all would propose people do instead of flying.

  11. jonbirch says:

use the phone. im, skype or ichat. write a letter. email. and fly only when absolutely necessary. if you really have to though, you have to i suppose… the people in the cartoon don’t have to, they choose to, like holiday makers… it’s them i’m really having a poke at. :-)
there is still no reason for subsidised flying. it should be very expensive and consumers and businesses should be paying the real cost. we would then see how many flights were absolutely necessary. these days people see flying as their right. it is not a right, it is a luxury… and one that is having a catastrophic effect on the environment.

  12. Angela says:

why are people asking YOU what they should do instead of flying? Research it yourselves. its easier to be defensive and debate than research and make a decision based on concrete facts. if we really are meant to be keepers of the earth, isn’t it our responsibility to know what we should do? the best we should do? ugh.

  13. jonbirch says:

haha. you go girl! nice rant… full marks for that outburst! :-)

  14. Laura says:

Angela, was that directed at me? I was just curious about what Jon thought alternatives could be to people flying. No defensiveness involved. I didn’t even “get” the footprint thing in the first place so as you can tell, I’m a little behind times on the whole issue. This cartoon got me thinking is all.
Didn’t mean to get anyone’s knickers in a knot.
