don’t normally do this. but i found this interesting.
i will have this song in my head for a while now.
to me, it seems in tradition with a myriad songs from the past that tell tales of folk heroes… a bit like songs about robin hood or king arthur. so what do you think? is it madness, is it an expression of hope, is it a worship song as some have suggested? one things for sure, it’s a catchy little number.
a interesting mix of all the above and for some reason i really like it.

started by going ‘what the heck’ and then found myself humming along….
i think it’s more a song of hope than a ‘worship song’

Yeah, I suppose it is in the great oral tradition. I agree with Jody that it is a song of hope which has its origins more in the great negro spirituals – the sort of thing I could imagine the likes of Paul Robeson singing. And not unlike that great anthem, ‘Things Can Only Get Better’, which heralded the arrival of Tony Blair in government office…

I just want the damn election to be over with and January 20th to come around so I don’t have to look at Bush anymore.
I just got back from Chicago (Obama’s stomping ground), where it is getting pretty intense – he’s a very savvy politician who beat the Clinton machine but he’s not a prophet but a politico – we can’t forget that distinction.

I am also unsure what to make of it. I guess, as has been said, that it is a song of hope rather then worship. They are just expressing their hope in someone who they see to have the way forwards.
And I certainly have it going around in my head now it is one catchy tune lol.

Haven’t listened to it (sorry), but I think the guy’s just the same – he’s not really going to change anything. Be a pleasant surprise if he did.

Care to do the music for this Jon?

I like the way some communities in the States seem to see Obalma as their own hero, and it is exciting that a Black American has marched into the White House
at the same time I’m sad that this is exciting, I’m sad it’s such a big deal, that there’s so much hurt and inequality around the globe, that people everywhere are excited about the racial aspect rather than the political dynamics – in what sense was that democracy (that millions of people feel so strongly about a black american leadership)
will we ever create a brotherhood in which people feel they count, are listened to? Will Obalma do that

There was something very pleasing about the coincidental rotaing of an American for intercessions this morning….

brilliant, andyp!
that’s kinda sweet robb.
yep i’m with the above who see this song as a song of hope.
i think obama is already different. i stayed up all night, watched mccains superb speech and then listened to a new president who said the right things… now i know he only ’said’ the right things, but we are talking about a country where the wrong things have been said by its president for a very long time now. he may be stuck with two wars and a bad economy, but he is not a warmonger or a man impressed by greed… this is major change in itself. whatever the next four years brings, however thorny, however difficult, last night (british time) america did the right thing and god bless her for it. one day ‘god bless america, land of the free’ will no longer ring hollow, it will be a truth… that is my hope.
thank you america.

For the first time since I’ve been politically conscious I have hope that we, America, might be something more than the most powerful empire on the face of the earth. I feel like we might finally be able to cut a path not predetermined by two polar opposite caricatures.
I’m hoping we are finally waking up from our fugue of power, arrogance, and greed. I just hope we don’t act like voting in Obama is enough.
On the song, it does strike me as a folk song praising a hero. Although I think it might be ok, I do think it’s a bit premature.

hi noncharon… i guess songs of hope are always premature, that’s the nature of hope. i agree with your sentiments. i think the arrogant and the greedy are probably still alive and well… hopefully this is the time when the great and the good have the loudest voice.
