what is it about other people’s lives that make it so important for people to know this kind of stuff. Are our lives so hollow/shallow that we NEED this to fill a gap. Or is life so harsh that we need to escape into the shallow lives of others?
sounds just like a sermon too me
Excellent ‘toon, Jon
omg everyone has sex everyday what’s the big deal.
“Give the people what they want” until they “rue the day” they got it.
Only way that people as a collective are going to learn is when it is “too late sucker!” – like when the Israelites begged God to give them a man as a King.
I wonder whether the Anglo-Saxon elevation of privacy makes innate human nosiness more pointed.
the opposite problem comes with the actions of Strauss-Kahn. Surely that’s something we ought to know? Private Eye gives some distinction in the kind of things we should know about. http://bit.ly/mGmYkY
That’s salacious and puerile!
NB:
Bigdaddywhale – for many yes
Sarah – omg If everybody did have sex everyday then perhaps people wouldn’t find it a big deal
Re: bigdaddywhale “… the shallow lives of others?”
Or do birds of a feather flock together?
Re: “Footballer has sex with A-list celeb!”
Yeaaaahhh, and this affects the flavor of beets in Boonville, how?
This expands and enriches my life and being by . . . ?
And this will help my grandkids understand their fractions homework because …?
“Everyone has sex every day” ha. Speak for yourself!
I guess the big deal is that people get hurt and its harder to heal if your hurt is splashed all over the tabloids. And hands up who here wants everything they’ve ever done that their not proud of to be on the front page of today’s Sun or Daily Mail? Let them what are without sins….
And sex is a big deal cos its an intimate thing. It affects us hugely on a deep level. It can hurt or help us immensely in the way it affects how we feel about ourselves.
I guess people are interested in these stories cos we’re designed to be interested in one another. They’re stories about choices and character and relationships. Gossip and Judgement and Salaciousness are maybe the dark side of that, but its good that we’re interested in other people’s lives, right? Sometimes i think people are more interested in what’s going on in celebrities’ lives than they are in their own. Maybe if we were more excited by our own lives and our friends’ lives we wouldn’t care so much about celebrities.
goodfield- we can but hope
