Incarnational risk taking…….
It could breathe better if it were opened instead of held like a weapon to bash things with.
is that what it means to hide behind scripture?
It could breathe better if people realized that Jesus is “the Word (of God)” and not the Bible. *nods*
Pingback: Restricting the Bible
shelly… yes it could.
cool pic Pat, like the boat
Some like to read it like a lawyer looking to strangle each syllable in isolation from the rest of the library. Without wanting to rehash someone else’s point, we fail to see The Word by elevating the canonical record of Him.
We believe in God, Father, Son and Holy Scripture. Sounds a little idolatrous to me.
Thanks Subo
Boats are important to me just at the moment for a number of reasons.
Robb – how do we best redress those balances then do you reckon?
robb… idolatrous indeed.
i like to read it like a comic …
can’t beat it Dennis, there’s some great yarns – & tales of folk makin trouble. & a fair bit I can relate to
true true. it makes me laugh, some things i just don’t get, theres all walks of life init and you can read it on the toilet just like the Beano …
I used to thrive on Beano, & Tintin. am sure they’ll be a good stash waiting on the new earth along with tins of quailty street made like they used to b
subo… have you seen spielberg’s amazing tintin movie yet? if you can, watch in 3D… it’s staggeringly good on the eyes and a rollicking adventure.
och, look at that, real time reply from jon. i’m happy. will check out the movi
Another recommendation for the Tin-Tin movie.
Great fun!
Jon, what is your belief about the bible?
i believe it is a book which in many and various ways documents the experiences of a nation finding it’s place in the world. through poetry, passed down stories, myths, historical fact, propaganda, etc.etc… i wonder whether behind your question is that other question; ‘do you believe the bible is the word of god?’ and my answer would be ‘no, i don’t believe it is.’ it is a book containing many words about god and the hebrew idea of their god. i believe it has exquisite value as a book from which all sorts of things can be learned… a lot good, but not all. it’s a scary book in the hands of some. it’s a book which informs my faith. it introduces me to my hero, whom i love. it gives me the odd answer but mostly invokes questions in me. it is best left unread by some because they want to bend it to their will and not in a good way. in many it has inspired great and good things, some have used it to do unspeakable harm. i could go on forever as the bible is fascinating… not as fascinating as the wonders in the world around me, which it speaks of beautifully so often, but fascinating. i’ll stop before i get boring, if i haven’t already.
dawn… i’m constantly learning, forgetting, learning again and am grateful for the message of grace which is the stand out theme for me in it’s pages.
what’s your belief about the bible?
hope that is a full enough answer and that i’ve expressed myself as i intended.
I believe the Bible is the Word of God, and that it guides my faith and the way i live. I dont think that anyone should not read the bible, but that they need to learn to read it correctly.
in the bible’s own words, jesus is the word of god, isn’t he? the bible isn’t jesus and at best gives us a portrait of him from a few perspectives. so i can’t see the bible as the word of god, more the words of people and their understanding of god. what do you mean by ‘correctly’?
Jon, I love how you expressed your take on the Bible – eloquent, honest, and very powerful in places . Thank you
There are correct ways to read the bible, aka reading it in context etc. Looking at what the whole bible says on a topic instead of just one or two verses. Otherwise you dont get the full picture.
Jon, do you believe the bible is inspired by God?
Also in other parts of the bible aka Romans, it refers to scripture, the teachings about Jesus as the word of God.
